This robust foundation provides advanced computing and networking capabilities such as preemptive multitasking, symmetric multiprocessing, and support for IPv6 and IPsec. Mac OS X Server features a server-optimized implementation of Java 2 and the latest in Web services and security standards. Cutting-edge remote-management tools allow you to securely manage and monitor your services from anywhere on the network, or even over the Internet.

Built on open standards, Mac OS X Server is a model citizen in a multiplatform world. It uses native protocols to enable Mac, Windows, and UNIX clients to share files and printers. Apple's new Open Directory architecture offers centralized management of network resources using LDAPv3 directory services. Mac OS X Server also supports NFS resharing over AFP, giving Mac clients easy access to enterprise storage with improved security.

A suite of standards-based Internet services is built into Mac OS X Server. An optimized Apache Web server provides high-performance hosting of secure, dynamic Web sites. QuickTime Streaming Server and QuickTime Broadcaster enable you to stream live events over the Internet--for instant delivery to audiences anywhere. Mac OS X Server also comes with a flexible mail server that supports POP and secure IMAP, as well as WebMail for browser-based e-mail access. Best of all, you can set up these services quickly and easily using the intuitive management tools in Mac OS X Server.

Not for old machines

I installed mac os 10.2 and it booted with no brightness. I'am using a apple wallstreet 250 MHZ. Every time I startup the screen is dim and I have to turn up the contrast. If I wake it up from sleep mode it won't let me adjust the brightness unless I reboot. A real big pain in the neck. I have been using OS 9 for 3 years now. I was planning on upgrading my memory and my hard drive. Then go to 10.2. I'am glad I tested it first before upgrading. That would be a waste of time and money. So it was a...

Older iMacs can't do both OS X and 9

Some features of OS X 10.2 are definitely better, faster on OS X 10.2 than on OS 9.1, but there are several anomalies when interfacing with a Windows dominated world, more than with OS 9.1, such as setting up email (Outlook doesn't seem to work with OS X 10.2), scrolling the sddress book, etc.The main problem is that on my iMac DV+ (bought late summer 2000), I can't run both Classic and OS X 10.2 - the OS X 10.2 install discs told me I had to do a complete memory wipe of all my Classic documents...

Substantial improvement

This is a very stable, incredibly smooth OS. It launches at lightning speed, is very intuitive and the learning curve is very short. If there is a downside, compatible professional graphic software is in short supply. It is a huge improvement over Windows and previous Mac OS....

Amazon reviews: Now featuring False Information!

Mac OS X does not disable built-in floppy drives. Mac OS Xruns better on computers that are built for it. Running it on a Beige G3 is like running Windows on a 486; you can do it, but it doesn't mean you should. Crashes occour from poorly-designed APPLICATIONS, not OS X. I have had OS X for over a year, and I have had only 2 'kernel panics' (full system lockups). hbj200 is wrong about the 1%. it's more like 8% and growing rapidly, and everyone uses Windows because they believe Bill's propaganda...
