ACD SYSTEMS ACDSee 4.0 Customer Reviews
Update on my previous review for ACDSee 4.0
-
...I want to let potential buyers know five things.
First, right now on Amazon.com ACDSee Power Pack 4.0 (which has the ACDSee 4.0 image viewer and two other programs) is priced at [current price]and is actually cheaper than the ACDSee 4.0 program purchased alone which is priced at [current price].Needless to say, the ACDSee Powerpack is the better buy. (The two other programs in the ACDSee Power Pack are ACD Foto Canvas, a photo editing program which I think is good; and ACD Foto Angelo, a program for creating slide shows and screen savers which I have looked at but not yet used.)
Second, on October 5, 2002 ACDSee released ACDSee 5.0.On the ACDSee website this sells for [current price].The ACDSee 5.0 Powerpack sells for [current price].These are prices for downloads and not for the programs on CDs.
Third, if history is any guide, ultimately Amazon.com will sell these upgraded versions and they will be cheaper at Amazon.com than at the ACDsee website. They will also be on CDs. Thank you Amazon.com!!!
Fourth, one has the option now of buying the ACDSee Power Pack 4.0 on CD from Amazon.com and upgrading to version 5.0 on the ACDSee website through an Internet download. (There is a fee involved for the upgrade.)
Fifth, ACDSee is a great program.I have already written a lengthy review for ACDSee 4.0 and there is no need for me to repeat the details here.

As I write this on October 6, 2002, I want to let potential buyers know five things.
First, right now on Amazon.com ACDSee Power Pack 4.0 (which has the ACDSee 4.0 image viewer and two other programs) is priced at $42.99 and is actually cheaper than the ACDSee 4.0 program purchased alone which is priced at $44.99.Needless to say, the ACDSee Powerpack is the better buy. (The two other programs in the ACDSee Power Pack are ACD Foto Canvas, a photo editing program which I think is good; and ACD Foto Angelo, a program for creating slide shows and screen savers which I have looked at but not yet used.)
Second, on October 5, 2002 ACDSee released ACDSee 5.0.On the ACDSee website this sells for 49.95.The ACDSee 5.0 Powerpack sells for 79.95.These are prices for downloads and not for the programs on CDs.
Third, if history is any guide, ultimately Amazon.com will sell these upgraded versions and they will be cheaper at Amazon.com than at the ACDsee website. They will also be on CDs. Thank you Amazon.com!!!

Version 4.02 is stable and good
-
I initally upgraded from Acdsee 3.1 SR1 to 4.0, and like a lot of people had stability problems, but 4.02 has proved very stable.
I prefer Acdsee to ThumbsPlus or Compupic Pro.
E-mailing via Acdsee is simple - I love it. Thumbnails in Acdsee also seem to be much clearer than in the competing products I tried.
I also like the way I can click on a thumbnail image and choose the image editor I want to automatically open it in - Photoshop/PaintShop etc.
Acdsee version 5 I hear will be available from the beginning of October 2002.9/24/2002 12:00 AM | Rating:

Sensational Image Viewer Program and Computer File Organizer
-
The best Image Viewer and computer file organizer available!!! By best I mean it has the simplest and yet fully functional Image Viewer interface available.I have been using the ACDSee image viewer and many ACDSee related products for about 9 years.I currently use both version 2.42 and version 3.1 on my computer.I am aware that version 4.0 is the current version and that in October 2002 version 5.0 will possibly be available.
I am in love with digital images.I currently own four great digital cameras. In additionmy wife has one, our two sons each have one, I bought my sister one, and I just bought my granddaughter one.All of us use ACDSee as our image viewing program and we all love it.
Here are some of the things that ACDSee does as an image viewer:
view images one by one; by slide show; full screen; view with less than full screen with tool bars on screen; view small images expanded to fill screen; view over-sided images shrunk to fit screen; view slide show with variable delay options; change images with the scroll wheel; change images with the mouse; zoom image on screen with the scroll wheel; shrink image on screen with the scroll wheel; navigate easily between image folders; rename individual files; rename file series; move images and files; copy images and files; delete images and files; create new folders; create new subfolders; and convert image type.I own two different image viewer programs that came with the various Fuji and Olympus cameras I own, one image viewer that came with my Dell Laptop, and various other programs that I have looked at as shareware on the Internet.I also have Microsoft Picture It and am familiar with the Microsoft XP photo interface. yet I have found nothing as straight forward and functional as ACDSee as an Image Viewer.
I also generally use ACDSee in lieu of the Windows Explore program to organize my computer and its files and folders. While it does not do anything that Explore does not do the interface of ACDSee is a couple clicks easier than Explore.
Please note that while I think that the ACDSee is great as a standalone product I think that the ACDSee Power Pack is a better buy because of all the programs that you get for the money. Also be aware that there is yet another related product called ACDSee Power Pack Suite with still more programs bundled together. So far as I know this product (the Power Pack SUITE) is available only on the ACDSee company web site. I very much wish it were sold by Amazon on CD because Amazon's pricing is better.
In nine years I have never needed to call ACDSee customer support; I have handled in excess of 30,000 images - viewing, organizing, filing, copying, moving, deleting, etc. etc. Neither I or any of the dozen of people that I have encouraged to use this program have had anything but praise for how wonderful it is, and how it makes using and viewing digital images so easy.

Disappointing
-
ACDSee has a nice mix of funtions but it also has some problems.
For me the biggest draw back is that it stops painting the thumbnails after I've been working for a while.Granted, I work with a lot of images (many thousands) but they claim it should handle it.Stopping and restarting the program gets it working again, but only for a while - and who doesn't love doing that!?. Support has been no help.
Printing is weak - probably because they want to sell you an add on component. My advice would be to look elsewhere.
